Oil Saver: Metsjö’s new system that reduces oil demand and removes the need for PTO

Metsjö presents Oil Saver, a new optional system for the company’s hooklifts. The system reduces the need for large hydraulic oil tanks and completely eliminates the requirement for a separate PTO-driven hydraulic system.

By using accumulator tanks that temporarily store hydraulic oil when not in use, even medium-sized tractors can power heavy hydraulic functions. The result is a simpler, safer, and more cost-efficient operation. The new system will be showcased at Agritechnica in Metsjö’s booth in Hall 4.

How the system works

Oil Saver operates fully automatically. During the work cycle, hydraulic oil is buffered in the system’s accumulator tanks and then returned to the tractor when needed. The system can be expanded with additional accumulator tanks depending on tractor size and requirements.

System pressure is automatically regulated and displayed on a pressure gauge or the tractor’s ISOBUS display. A pressure limiter ensures that maximum pressure never exceeds 170 bar, and a shut-off valve allows the system to be safely depressurized during service. Oil saver requires significantly less maintenance than a PTO-driven hydraulic system.

Field experience from Germany

“We use a Fendt 714 with the Oil Saver to haul manure, soil, and silage. Before, we lacked hydraulic oil capacity and needed a PTO. Now, Oil Saver works completely independently without any driver input. No service, easy to use, and it performs like a regular system even with 17-ton loads. It’s the smartest thing we’ve added to the farm in years.”

Advantages of Oil Saver

• Smaller tractors can handle larger jobs – no need for extra PTO hydraulics.

• Safer working environment – eliminates the PTO shaft, a common cause of farm accidents.

• Cost-efficient – lower purchase cost than a separate hydraulic system and no filter or service intervals.

• Energy-efficient – smaller oil volume, reduced fuel consumption.

• Flexible – can also be retrofitted to existing hooklifts and tipping trailers.

With Oil Saver, Metsjö continues to develop technology that combines high performance with simplicity and safety – for smarter and more sustainable farming.

“Oil Saver is a smart yet robust system that allows more users to make the most of their existing tractors. It’s about reducing resource needs while increasing everyday safety,” says Anders Ivarsson, CEO of Metsjö.
