Metsjö invests in advanced large-format laser technology for the heavy constructions of the future

Ivarssons i Metsjö AB continues its investments in advanced manufacturing technology and has now commissioned a new large-format laser cutting machine for processing very large steel structures. The investment strengthens Metsjö’s capacity to manufacture large trailers, hooklift trailers and other heavy steel constructions with high precision, low tare weight and improved structural strength.

The new flatbed laser system is equipped with a 30 kW laser and can process steel plates up to 16.5 metres in length and 4.2 metres in width. The machine can cut material thicknesses up to 80 mm and also features advanced 3D cutting capabilities.

Previously, Metsjö operated conventional flatbed lasers for formats up to approximately 6 x 2.5 metres, but this new investment opens entirely new possibilities for manufacturing large and complex structures with fewer weld joints and higher precision.

“When building large structures, it is important to minimise the number of joints. Every joint adds weight and can potentially reduce structural strength. With this investment, we can manufacture larger components in a single piece while maintaining extremely high precision throughout the production process,” says Anders Ivarsson, CEO of Metsjö.

Precision throughout the entire production chain

The new large-format laser complements Metsjö’s previous investments in advanced manufacturing technology, including the company’s large 3D tube laser and a 1,000-ton press brake.

The combination of these machines makes it possible to manufacture very large structural components with extremely high precision and excellent fit between parts.

The advanced 3D cutting capability enables precisely prepared weld joints and complex geometries directly in the laser cutting process, reducing the need for secondary processing and increasing production efficiency.

“The combination of our large flatbed laser, tube laser and powerful press brake allows us to design products where the components fit together with extremely high precision. This results in stronger constructions, lower tare weight and more efficient production,” says Anders Ivarsson.

Developed for large and advanced constructions

The investment is part of Metsjö’s long-term strategy to develop and manufacture some of the market’s most advanced tractor-drawn transport solutions.

With the ability to process very large steel plates and profiles in full length, Metsjö can further reduce the need for joints and welding in chassis, bodies and load-bearing structures.

The technology also strengthens Metsjö’s capacity to manufacture other large steel constructions such as machine halls, gas containers, chemical storage units and customised steel structures.

This provides several technical and production-related advantages:

• Higher structural strength
• Lower tare weight
• Increased manufacturing precision
• More efficient assembly
• Improved long-term durability

Swedish production with advanced manufacturing technology

All development and manufacturing take place in Metsjö outside Linköping, Sweden, where the company operates a production facility of approximately 30,000 m².

Metsjö therefore continues to invest in advanced European manufacturing technology to strengthen its position in large tractor-drawn trailers, hooklift trailers and steel constructions for agriculture and contracting industries.

Metsjö is certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 3834-2, EN 1090 and Swedish Environmental Base, ensuring quality-assured processes, high welding competence and a long-term focus on sustainable production.
